PT5521 Week 7

Welcome to “Week 7” of Introduction to Theological Research and Writing! The lecture and reading for Week 7 will introduce the topic of biblical exegesis as research.

This week’s assignments:

  1. Watch the lecture for week 7. Please do not make copies of lecture recordings.
  2. Read Vyhmeister chapter 2.
  3. Submit the mid-term survey paper of at least 6 secondary sources.

If needed, the mid-term may be submitted next week with no late penalty. Remember that the mid-term paper should be double-spaced in Times New Roman, 12-point font. It should be from 6-8 pages (and 6 pages is really fine, unless you need 8 pages. Please do not go over 8 pages). Include a title page, the text of your paper with headings and footnotes, and a bibliography (but no contents page for the mid-term paper). Please remember that footnotes should be provided at the sentence level, not at the paragraph level. Though the body of the paper only summarizes 6-8 scholarly sources, include all of the scholarly sources you found for your citations exercise in the bibliography. Do not include the annotations. Consider the sample outline for the text given in last week’s introduction and use the summaries of your sources you have written already.

Also, start thinking about your next assignment, the stage 1 exegesis paper. There is a sample exegesis paper under the materials tab. This week or next, choose one of the passages below for your paper. I am also open to your suggestions on a passage, if it would help you to have synergy with your final research paper or even a preaching or teaching project you are already preparing. If you want to suggest a different passage, it should be at least five verses, but around ten verses would be better to have more context. You may also adjust your chosen passage by a verse or two.

  1. Ruth 1:1-18 Where You Go, I Go
  2. Psalm 110 The Order of Melchizedek
  3. Psalm 98:1-9 A New Song
  4. Proverbs 3:1-12 Trust in the Lord
  5. Isaiah 40:3-8 The Word Will Stand Forever
  6. Isaiah 53:1-12 The Suffering Servant
  7. Isaiah 64:1-12 Potter and Clay
  8. Ezekiel 37:1-14 Dry Bones
  9. Matt. 5:1-12 The Beatitudes
  10. Matt. 5:13-16 Salt and Light
  11. John 1:1-18 Prologue
  12. John 21:15-19 Peter Restored
  13. 1 Cor. 12:31-13:13 Love
  14. 2 Cor. 4:7-12d Jars of Clay
  15. Col. 3: 5-17 The New Self
  16. Heb. 1:1-14 Jesus at God’s Right Hand

Best wishes,

Dr. Pat Sanders
