Welcome to “Week 3” of Introduction to Theological Research and Writing! The lecture and reading for Week 3 will introduce the topics of title pages, sources, bibliographies and footnotes.
This week’s assignments:
- Watch the lecture for week 3. Please do not make copies of lecture recordings. You can view them within the course as many times as needed.
- Read Turabian pp. 25-50.
- Read Vyhmeister chaps. 18, 21.
- Begin reading the required book for your research topic.
- Write and submit two reflection paragraphs on the Turabian reading in section 4.1 about how to engage sources. See the suggested outline under the “Materials” tab. Please download a copy of this document and do not update it in the LMS directly.
- Submit the ITRW Worksheet.
- Find 13 sources (to be submitted later) related to your broad research topic as follows:
- 5 scholarly books
- 5 peer-reviewed journal articles
- 3 other sources (a PhD dissertation, a book review, and a biblical passage. See Turabian chapter 17 for examples.)
You should write and submit via email two reflection paragraphs on the Turabian reading that are about 5 sentences each. Use headings in bold font for each paragraph. Remember that according to the Turabian style guide, you need two blank lines before a heading (except at the top of a page) and one blank line after it. Please submit these paragraphs as a Word document with Times New Roman, 12-point font and double-space your work.
Also, please submit the ITRW Worksheet.
For help with finding 15 sources on your broad research topic:
- See the BTS Writing Center at https://www.btswritingcenter.net/ and click on the “Journals and Logos” tab for a list of online resources.
- Your local libraries, especially university libraries, will have resources or might be able to get them through the Interlibrary Loan program (ILL). If you are in the Birmingham area, BTS students may use the Samford University Library.
- You also should have a free Logos package that is available to BTS students. If you have not downloaded it yet, please do so this week. Dr. Thad James can help you get access to it. His email address is [email protected]. Some helpful videos for learning to use and search your Logos package can be found at logos.com/student-training. For each scholarly source that you find on your broad research topic, note its title, author, publisher, and date of publication so that you can find it again.
Please email, if you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Dr. Pat Sanders
